Building a WordPress website with the Claude AI assistant open alongside the editor, build a website with Claude AI

AI has changed how websites get built — but not in the way most articles describe. If you want to build a website with Claude AI, it is important to understand what Claude can and cannot actually do. Claude AI is not a website builder: there are no templates to pick, no drag-and-drop editor, and no publish button. Claude is an AI assistant, and that’s precisely what makes it more powerful than any template tool. Used well, it acts as a copywriter, developer, SEO assistant, and strategist sitting beside you while you build in WordPress.

At Hopeleaf, we build client websites every week with Claude in the workflow, and this guide shares that real process: what Claude actually does at each stage, the prompts that work, and where human judgement still decides the outcome.

What Claude AI Is (and Isn't)

Let’s set expectations clearly, because plenty of content online gets this wrong. Claude is a conversational AI assistant made by Anthropic. You talk to it, and it produces text, code, ideas, and analysis. Applied to web projects, that means Claude can:

  • Write and refine website copy — headlines, service pages, product descriptions, blog posts
  • Generate working code: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP snippets or custom WordPress functions
  • Prototype page layouts and interactive elements you can preview instantly
  • Draft SEO metadata, schema markup, and keyword-mapped page outlines
  • Review your existing content and suggest structural or conversion improvements

What Claude doesn’t do: host your website, install WordPress, provide themes or stock images, publish pages, or manage your domain. The website itself still lives somewhere — for most businesses, that should be WordPress, which you own outright. The winning combination we use daily is Claude for thinking and drafting, WordPress + Elementor for building and running.

Why Use AI in Your Website Build at All?

The honest case for AI isn’t “websites in 60 seconds” — it’s compression of the slow parts. In our projects, Claude reliably cuts hours from three phases: first-draft copywriting (the blank-page stage that stalls most website projects), code for custom functionality that would otherwise be written from scratch, and SEO groundwork like meta descriptions and FAQ drafting. That time doesn’t disappear — it gets reinvested in design quality, strategy, and testing, which is why AI-assisted projects can be both faster and better than manual ones.

The same efficiency is available to you whether you’re building your own site or briefing an agency. Understanding what AI can genuinely automate also makes you a sharper buyer of web services.

Getting Started with Claude

Setting up takes minutes: go to claude.ai, create a free account, and you’re in a chat interface. The free tier is enough to explore; the paid plan raises usage limits and adds features like Projects, which matter for website work — a Project lets you store your brand details, tone of voice, and service information once, so every chat starts already knowing your business.

Before your first prompt, gather the raw material Claude needs to be useful: what your business does, who your customers are, what makes you different, the pages you need, and one or two competitor sites you admire. Five minutes of context produces dramatically better output than “write me a homepage.”

Step-by-Step: Build a website with Claude AI + WordPress

Step 1: Plan the site structure
Describe your business to Claude and ask it to propose a sitemap and the goal of each page. Challenge it, cut pages, merge others — this conversation replaces the blank whiteboard, and it’s where Claude shines as a strategist.
Step 2: Draft the content first
Ask Claude for each page’s copy: headline options, section-by-section text, calls to action. Give it real details — services, prices, locations, testimonials — and then edit for accuracy and voice. Never publish AI copy unedited; Claude produces excellent first drafts, and first drafts are meant to be shaped. Building content-first (rather than pouring lorem ipsum into a design) consistently produces better websites.
Step 3: Set up WordPress
Get hosting, install WordPress, and add your builder — we use Elementor Pro. If any step confuses you, ask Claude: it’s genuinely good tech support for “how do I point my domain’s DNS?” or “which image format should I upload?”
Step 4: Build the pages
Recreate the planned structure in Elementor, pasting in the approved copy. Claude helps here in two ways: describe a layout problem (“how should I arrange three services with unequal amounts of text?”) for instant design options, or ask for custom CSS snippets when you want an effect Elementor doesn’t offer out of the box. When you need real functionality — a calculator, a custom form behaviour, a snippet in functions.php — Claude writes working code you can paste in. Test any code on a staging site first.
Step 5: SEO groundwork
Ask Claude to write a meta title (under 60 characters) and meta description (under 155) for every page, targeting each page’s keyword; paste them into Rank Math or Yoast. Have it draft FAQ sections for your key pages and generate the matching FAQ schema markup — increasingly valuable now that AI search engines pull answers directly from well-structured pages.
Step 6: Test and launch
Claude can produce a personalised pre-launch checklist, but the testing itself is human work: click every link, submit every form, test checkout, and check the site on a real phone. Run PageSpeed Insights, and paste any confusing results into Claude for a plain-English explanation and fixes. Then launch, connect Search Console, and submit your sitemap.

Design: Where Human Judgement Still Rules

Claude can suggest layouts, colour pairings, and UX improvements — and its advice on hierarchy, whitespace, and mobile behaviour is solid. What it can’t do is see your rendered page or make taste-level brand decisions. Keep design consistent (one colour scheme, two fonts, uniform spacing), keep navigation obvious, and put a clear call to action on every page. When a section feels off, describe it to Claude and you’ll usually get a diagnosis worth trying; when it comes to what feels right for your brand, trust your eye or hire one.

Maintaining Your Website with Claude's Help

After launch, Claude stays useful: monthly blog drafting (feed it your customer questions as topics), refreshing dated content, writing replies to reviews, and explaining any WordPress error message you paste in. What Claude can’t handle is the operational side — updates, backups, security monitoring, and speed optimisation still need doing on the actual site, on a schedule. That’s standard maintenance discipline whether AI is involved or not.

The Honest Limits — and When to Bring In Professionals

A capable DIYer with Claude and Elementor can absolutely ship a respectable small business website — that’s a genuine and recent shift. The gap that remains is judgement: knowing which of Claude’s ten suggestions is the right one, making the design decisions that build trust, structuring the site so it ranks, and taking responsibility when something breaks. It’s the difference between having a brilliant assistant and having an experienced team.

That’s also exactly how we work: our developers and designers use Claude and other AI tools daily, which is why our builds are faster than traditional agency timelines without cutting corners. You get the AI-era efficiency and the specialist judgement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Claude AI build a complete website by itself?
No. Claude generates content, code, and plans, but a website needs a platform (like WordPress), hosting, and someone assembling and testing the result. Claude is the assistant, not the builder.
Is Claude free to use for website projects?
There’s a capable free tier; the paid plan (around $20/month) raises limits and adds Projects, which is worth it for sustained website work.
Claude vs ChatGPT — which is better for building websites?
Both are capable. In our workflow Claude stands out for long-form content quality and clean, well-explained code, but the process in this guide works with either — the workflow matters more than the tool.
Will Google penalise AI-assisted content?
Google’s guidance targets low-quality content, not AI use. Edited, accurate, genuinely helpful content performs fine regardless of how the first draft was written; lazy unedited AI filler performs poorly for the same reason lazy human filler does.
